My Musical Protest

OK, so this was my playlist for November 13, 2016, with a bit of sarcasm and an amazement that in the previous five days, I’ve only had to unfriend 7 people:

Nowhere To Run – Martha & The Vandellas                                                       It’s The End Of The World As We Know It – REM                                                   What’s Going On – Marvin Gaye                                                                     Everybody Wants To Rule The World – Tears For Fears                                               Help! – The Beatles                                                                               Heartache Tonight – The Eagles                                                                     Suzanne – Leonard Cohen (had to put it in, whether or not it fit the theme)                       Another Brick In The Wall – Pink Floyd                                                             Pride In The Name Of Love – U2                                                                     Peaches – Presidents Of The United States Of America (also not in theme, but their name!!)         Rave On – Buddy Holly (there for its greatness)                                                   Jammin’ – Bob Marley & The Wailers (request)                                                       But It’s Alright – J.J. Jackson (MY request)                                                       Don’t Worry, Be Happy – Bobby McFerrin (but of course!)                                           The Good, The Bad, The Ugly – Hugo Montenegro                                                     Scooby Snacks – Fun Lovin’ Criminals (great response, even if it deviated from theme)             We Gotta Get Out Of This Place – Animals                                                           I Shot The Sheriff – Eric Clapton                                                                 Games People Play – Joe South                                                                     Nellie The Elephant – Toy Dolls (novelty UK 80’s hit, where the elephant sfx is “trump, trump…”) Elected – Alice Cooper (and he was a Trump supporter!)                                             The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum – Fun Boy Three (first tune I played on Brexit Sunday)     Ain’t Nothing You Can Do – Bobby Bland                                                             You’re So Vain – Carly Simon (great response)                                                     Chain Of Fools – Aretha Franklin                                                                   Casanova – Levert (only because I think it’s one of a handful of great 80’s Soul songs)           Positively Fourth Street – Bob Dylan (then back to reality)                                       Four Walls – Jim Reeves (no idea, maybe I just like it)                                           Tequila – The Champs (always a crowd pleaser)                                                     The Story Of The Blues -Wah! (US people don’t know it, but a great statement about what is)       Stuck In The Middle With You – Stealers Wheel                                                     Respect Yourself – Staple Singers                                                               That’s Life – Frank Sinatra (yep!)                                                                 Allentown – Billy Joel (never a Billy fan, but gotta admit he nailed it on this one)               It’s Your Thing – Isley Brothers                                                                   Don’t Know Much – Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville (no political statement, but lovely song!)     What The World Needs Now Is Love – Jackie DeShannon                                               One Nation Under A Groove – Funkadelic (been waiting a while to play this one)                   Keep Searchin’ (We’ll Follow The Sun) – Del Shannon (rewrite of “Runaway,” poignant nonetheless)   Won’t Get Fooled Again – The Who (worked coming out of the previous since both are in A)           Wade In The Water – Ramsey Lewis                                                                   You Win Again – The Bee Gees (despite its title, didn’t actually fit the theme, but worked anyway) Everybody Plays The Fool – The Main Ingredient                                                     Land Of Make Believe – Bucks Fizz (perhaps I was alone in liking this one)                         Yesterday – The Beatles (but redeemed myself)                                                     The Sign – Ace Of Base (gotta go with my demographic)                                             Roberta – Frankie Ford (but also gotta go with my personal faves)                                 Let Your Yeah Be Yeah – The Pioneers                                                               I Will Always Love You – Dolly Parton (someone else did this song, but this is the real deal)     Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) – Backstreet Boys (no politics, but an unignorable tune)             Up On The Roof – The Drifters (another one for me)                                                 Don’t Dream It’s Over – Crowded House                                                             Classical Gas – Mason Williams (for no other reason than a forgotten gem)                         Good Tradition – Tanita Tikaram (ditto from the late 80’s)                                         You Can’t Always Get What You Want – Rolling Stones (if Mick sings this at Trump’s inauguration, which he currently jokes about, I’ll never play another Stones tune)                               Another One Bites The Dust – Queen                                                                 The Wonder Of You – Elvis (just a feel good tune, nothing more)                                   Ain’t No Sunshine – Bill Withers (he says “I know” 26 times, for you trivia buffs)                 A Change Is Gonna Come – Sam Cooke (is there a better one to go out on?)
